SEE ME was commissioned by Fifth Word, funded by Heritage Lottery-fund, in partnership with Nottingham Libraries and supported by Nottingham Playhouse.
Fifth Word recruited young Muslim girls in Nottingham and trained them in oral history skills, photography and audio recording. Equipped with these skills, they interviewed eight inspirational women of Muslim heritage in Nottingham.
I then listened to the interviews and selected a memory or affirmation to illustrate. Quotes from the interviews are included directly in the artwork. I drew immense inspiration from Islamic Miniatures, pondering once again their resemblance to comic art. Each interviewee’s podcast can be accessed by scanning the accompanying QR code.
The touring pop-up exhibition launched at Nottingham Central Library, and then toured to Nottingham libraries as well as the theatres across the UK hosting the touring production of Fifth Word’s new show ‘Liberation Squares’, in Spring 2024.
Access the digital version of the booklet here.
I also worked with Fifth Word to deliver a series of comic books workshops to Nottingham-based, young Muslim women. Read more about the workshops here.
